I had read that you could put orchid seeds in the same container the mother was growing in and they might sprout. This is the first time I've seen photos of someone who did it though.

I sprinkled the seeds in the basket with my R. retusa, it was rowing with some coconut husk, but sphagnum should work fine as well. The seeds germinate because they find the right symbiotic fungii that can colonise the seeds and produce the sugars that help the seeds to germinate. It is possible mostly if the plants were collected from the wild, because only then they have the associated fungii with the roots. Orchids cultivated by tissue culture lack these.

That's AWESOME!! I've got my first seed pod maturing and I was debating which route to go with the seeds...I eventually decided against trying to sow them around the mother plant because sphag tends to invite mold in my damp climate in Pennsylvania, so I have my mother plant in a mix of coarse bark and LECA pellets. I don't think the baby plants would "take" in such a dry substrate. Any thoughts?

At any rate, WAY TO GO!!!

Very impressive to actually get it to germinate in situ.
