    Default Vandas in Flasks

    Hi all!

My friend brought me three flasks of Vandas from Thailand. This is my first time ever to have flasks orchids. Quite a number of first-time orchid experiences for me lately hahaha! So happy yet so excited...and a bit worried? Anyway, I'm not very sure on what to do with these cause I am so afraid that they will wither as soon as I remove them from the flask...

And one of them got a mold-like look on top of the gel, is this normal? Or need I deflask it already?

    Thank you!

    My plans:

for the two smaller seedlings, will wait a couple of months before deflasking them...

for the ASCD Splash Red, since its bigger (but I'm hoping to let it grow a bit more before deflasking), deflask them then put them in a pot with barks, then put them inside a bag... but wondering if they can still wait or in need of deflasking already...

I tend to let them grow in the flask as long as possible. The mold on that one is disturbing. Did it arrive that way? I would probably pot up those seedlings just to be safe, but maybe someone who has dealt with mold in a flask will see this and chime in with some advice based on personal experience instead of just an opinion.

    cheers,
    BD

Yes you want to remove the the seedlings from the moldy flask as soon as possible or they will die. Clean it with a 0.1% solution of ethacridine lactate. It is sold as antiseptic tablets for gargling or as mouth wash. Then move on to normal deflasking.

Yes Bruce, this flask arrived with molds already...I'm not sure if it was purchased that way, but maybe my friend didn't notice it.

So, therefore, it's time to deflask it....thanks again to all of you!
