Cool My 1st Flask - The Ghost Orchid

This is a flask of Dendrophylax lindenii, or the ghost orchid. They are fairly difficult to grow so I will be curious to see how I do with them. I want to take a couple over to the place where the Tampensis grows as I know a perfect spot to put a couple. There is a natural spring there and a couple trees cloaked in shade enough that these should thrive. I am thinking I will leave them in the flask until they get a little larger. When I deflask I will do a step-by-step article as I have spent a great deal of time studying various methods. Hopefully this will be a successful effort. I would love to be able to return a few to the wild.

When I saw them for sale I hurried and got the first order in thereby insuring I got first and hopefully best pick. :0) I am sooo excited. When they look like they are growing again and large enough i'll unflask them. For now I am going to keep them on my desk and enjoy watching the things grow. I've also got a flask of vanda plants coming shortly. I decided I do well enough with them that they should do well. Thankfully all I have to do is going out to the big oak in front and pick some nice clumps of spanish moss for them. I started getting ready for them last week...it's too exciting. Never thought i'd do this, but just couldn't resist the ghost orchid flask.

I love your thought to return them to the wild. You have a nice science project going. Keep us informed.

Good luck! I've been considering starting with a community pot of something, then seeing if I can work with a flask. Too much fun!

Thanks Everyone. I will definitely update when I unflask. I read and read to make sure I have everyone's "best" methods in mind before I begin. I plan on using a plastic bin with a few inches of rainwater, fresh spanish moss off the tree in front (debugged of course), and I will lay the tiny things onto a piece of wood, a couple on a round piece of wire and small twigs that will lay on the bed of moss. I also want to take a couple of the tiny ones and try to put them next to the spring I mentioned. Sometimes nature handles things much better than we mere mortals. I know it will be a challenge but sometimes I seem to handle the hard plants better than the basic ones. lol I figured why not...without trying I'll never know if I can. It will be a couple months before they come out. .I want to make sure they have the best chance possible.
