Flies around my phalaenopsis

    Default Flies around my phalaenopsis

    Hello team,

    I'm new to this forum.... my name is Luis from Puerto Rico. I have a quick question. I have some phalaenopsis and about a week ago flies are leaving the spikes and flowers with droppings.....any suggestion to keep them away of my phals...

    It is quite not clear from the picture what these flies (fruit flies?) are but could be ones attracted by the flower and are trying to pollinate it. If they don't do any damage I would leave them alone and possibly wipe the droppings with a wet tissue.

    watch closely, if they manage to pollinate the phal then flowers would drop. I would not want that for a Phal hybrid and if there is any chance of this pollination, I would possibly move the phal indoors.

    You can get those yellow sticky strips and place around your growing area. The flies are more attracted to those. They look kind of like this: http://farmhouse38.files.wordpress.c..._0002-copy.jpg

    Depending on the size, they could be fungus gnats (small, about 1/8", mosquito-like) which come from the growing media and, based on their life cycle, you could continue to have them as females can produce as much as 200 eggs. If that's what they are - you can let the medium dry out a little more between watering (down 1-2 inches), or you can use a mild insecticide (I like insecticidal soap) to get rid of them in the medium.
