    Default Orchid name question

I would first like to thank Julie for her incredible post on Orchid Naming for Dummies-so easy to read and understand! If I had come across that piece earlier in my addiction I wouldn't have half the NOID's I do (though I love them dearly). Now I'm really jazzed about getting plants with names!

I need a bit of help with a new orchid I picked up at a recent show though. The tag says: Paph. (Makuli-curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph. Maudiae "Napa Valley" HCC/AOS x Sib
I understand everything except why some of it is in parenthesis. Can you help me out?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Paph. (Makuli-curtisii)-Maudiae x Paph. Maudiae "Napa Valley" HCC/AOS x Sib

    SHOULD be written as

Paph. ((Makuli X curtisii) X Maudiae) X (Paph. Maudiae "Napa Valley" HCC/AOS x Sibling)

Where Makuli X curtisii is the first cross and it is then crossed with Maudiae.
The result was liked and kept for breeding........and they used a plant that was the result of Paph. Maudiae "Napa Valley" HCC/AOS X Sibling

    Ok...

Makuli x curstisii (curtisii aka superbiens) is Paph. Allegria Gutie.

Paph. Allegria Gutie x Maudiae is Paph. Janet Kunkle (ugh, on the names!)

Janet Kunkle x Maudiae is Paph. Hsinying Majakun.

So that's what you've got, Sarah: Paph. Hsinying Majakun!

OM, thanks - sadly, when I saw it in mathmatical layout I knew right away what they were trying to say - I'm such a geek - me and numbers, we're buds.

Julie, your knowledge continues to impress me, thank you.

    Regards,
    Sarah

Sarah, as much as I'd love your undying adulation, I must admit that I purchased a pricey orchid database that coughs up these hairballs of wisdom.

I'm the data entry clerk - not the arbiter of knowledge.

    Cheers!

if you get a plant wich is a hybryd and shows the parents name you can look it up at this link

    http://www.rhs.org.uk/research/regis..._parentage.asp

or if you have the name and would like to know the parents ,then

    I love this place!!!

I just purchased the same plant this past weekend, Google'd part of the name, and it leads me back here... glad to hear it has a real name instead of that tongue-twisting sequence of words.

I know that this is an old thread, but apparently this is still an issue with the naming of this cross two years later. I purchased the very same tagged plant this past August(2008). Exactly the same! Wouldn't you think the name would have been applied by now. I had to do research (ask the experts) through the forums to get to the bottom of this tag. It was hieroglyphics to me; read lack of experience. NIce bloom that deserves a proper name.

yep, it sure is a lovely bloom... the green and whites are my favourite maudiae-type slipper orchids...

you know, i would just grab a new tag and put Paph Hsinying Majakun on it.

Also, not sure how far you want to take this addiction... but i also have a database (one's just a normal word format and the other is based on Microsoft Access) and I always put the new names with the old names and give it my own database number....

yes I know, I'm also a total GEEK!
