They seem to like the Birch. The damaged roots visable came that way from the supplier, and the new roots are the good looking ones.

    So glad you posted this.
Just so happens that I have a birch tree that must be removed because of borers. I was also looking for a suitable mount for a ghost orchid.
You've given me a great idea!
    Thanks.

Looks great! My concern would be that, although the bark of that Birch takes it's time to rot, the wood is soft and rots fairly quickly.

I live in a damp mixed northern woods and access to moss here is not an issue. I rarely use it for the number of insects and their eggs are quite numerous, in a moss colony.

I do wonder how long they will last on these. Also, if you look closely at the pictures there is some black stuff that oozes out - probabaly from not curing them very long. It doesn't bother the orchids but it will get on your hands. I hope that will pass.

I don't worry so much about the bugs - I rinsed the moss and haven't seen anything emerge let alone get on the plants. I feel that they would likely be harmless bugs as well, but if you have problems I would avoid it too. The moss from the box store seemed to be quite dirty and smelled horrible. I think it was collected partially decomposed. AAA moss is probably just more lively when collected and washed better.
