Question Bagged Box Plant Misleading Epi Mabel Kanda

Okay, my local boxstore sells bagged orchids for great prices. I've gotten some good buys there including an Encyclia Alata last spring that still hasn't bloomed but has great growth. I just picked up a bag with an image and name of Epidendrum Mabel Kanda. Which is a plant that I've been looking for and was excited to find for less than 12 bucks, but after getting home and unwrapping the orchid with two new growths I've discovered a tag claiming that it's really a cross between Epi. Mabel Kanda 'MIYAO' x Epi. Randianum!!! Talk about bait and switch. I can't find any pictures of this cross and now wonder what I'm getting... Does anyone have any history on this cross? What's the bloom look like? Unfortunately, you can't get into the bag until you buy the plant but I could still return it...anybody with experience on this? Is it a keeper or a dumper?

And while we're at it. Has anyone's Alata bloomed yet? Mine grew and incredible new PB last summer so I'm expecting great things but so far, no spike.

Epi randianum is another term for Epi. atropurpureum var. randianum or randii

Here is a pic of randii

I posted a pic of Epicyclia Mabel Kanda earlier today.

I would say this cross should be nice. Brown or brown and green petals and sepals, a pink to pink and white striped lip.

alata blooms later in the season for me. Maybe June.

    Ron,
Have to admit. I like the pure Mabel Kanda better than the Epi. atropurpureum...something about the green and pink together. Thanks for the heads up on the Alata. It gives me hope. Mine has already started developing a new PB, but last year's is so large I can't imagine not seeing a bloom. My other encyclias have bloomed or are in bloom already.

Such is the deal with bag babies. Never go what is on the outside packaging. Look for the tag in the pot...a lot of times you can make it out easily.

Keep it! Uber cheap and it could have award potential. I love surprises and you just never know.

I bet it will be really cool when it blooms. Next time, look through the clear plastic bag and try to read to the tag

Well, I've been known to rip off the staple and open the bag...I should have done that! The tag was stuck down in the pot and I couldn't see the second name. I'm kind of on an encyclia-fever.

I open the stapled bags all the time. One time, a garden associate came over to help me and I told them that if I can't see the tag, I don't buy the plant and they left me alone

Anyway, I think you're doing the plant a great service by letting some air circulation into the plastic bag of death

I just checked the RHS website. That cross isn't registered.
