Default NOID Phal World Prices

I'm on holiday visiting my parents back home in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks and have found that the straight forward NOID phals in the stores here are much cheaper than they are in Canada; 6.50 to 7.50 euro will buy you a nice phal in the Netherlands while I would probably need to pay close to 15 to 25 in Canada for a similar NOID. I'm so jealous of my parents. It might be a good thing though otherwise I'd buy a new one every week FOR SURE.

This price difference made me wonder how prices vary around the rest of the world and what the major reason for these fluctuations would be?

PS also love the fact that the Phals here in the Netherlands are sold in clear pots and not in the dark plastic pots like in Canada.

A large NOID phal in Texas would cost about $15 bucks at the grocery store. As far as price differences..hmm..

I would think the closer the country is to Taiwan, the cheaper the transportation costs would be; hence the cheaper price. I'm sure most of these NOID finds are imported cheaply from Taiwan..just a guess...don't hold me to it!

Geez...I wouldn't mind a trip to the Netherlands now

Not all phals are imported straight from Taiwan, the Netherlands have a huge nursery/cut flower industry, including orchids. Most noids that I find in Greece come from there.
Not to mention other plants with similar vegetative needs to tomatoes.
EDIT: Which plants one could find in the netherlands...Phew. Close one.

Most of the noid hybrids here are grown in the Netherlands. Prices here range a bit, even for a noid - in the local discount grocery store 6-7 euros, 7-9 euros for better plants in a big box store and upwards of 10 euros from florists, though I doubt they are any different than the big box store plants. Most hardly even have a grower listed on them, but if they do it is 4 out of 5 times in the Netherlands. Seems to be the modern equivalent of the tulip!

I wasn't aware of the Netherlands being an orchid mecca Thanks to all the Europeans...I learned something new today

Yeah we've got the good stuff right here in our neighbourhood! Who wants to pay duties and phytosanitary papers anyway? I can get my seedlings within 3 days from the nursery in Netherlands or Germany to my home at half the cost.
