    There are 3 types of roots in Phals: aerial, epiphytic, and substrate. The aerial and epiphytic are primarily used for adhesion to surfaces while the substrate roots are used for absorption of water and nutrients.

    So, if you are planning to mount them, you would want to encourage the aerials but otherwise prefer the substrate?

    The article is definitely from a commercial orchid grower point of view. I think that you want the aerial roots if you are going to mount. I think that they will grow just because the plant knows that it is mounted!
