    Default Fertilizer Experiment

Apparently John and I are on the same wavelength. I have been doing some research and decided to try my own fertilizer experiment on the several phal flasks I just deflasked. So, here's my experiment.

    Group 1--my control
DynaGrow 7-9-5 every water (with a monthly flush)
This is what I've used for years, so it will be my control group.

    Group 2
Peters 20-20-20 + Fulvic acid every water
    2x month seaweed and Hygrozone
I posted questions about some of these--apparently it is fairly uncommon. I read about this in a journal and really want to try it. Supposedly you can get phal seedlings to blooming size in 2 years. We'll see.

    Group 3
MSU fertilizer + 2x month SuperThrive
This is something I started using recently and like it, but don't know how it compares.

    The seedlings are hardened off
    Phal amabilis
    P. Tai-I Yellow Bird x Dtps. New Candy
    P. Diamond Beauty x Dtps. Sogo Beach
    P. Salu Peoker x Dtps. Leopard Prince
    P. Tai-I Yellow Bird x P. Timothy Christopher
    P. Diamond Beauty x Dtps. Sogo Smith

These plants are all new crosses--so I'm excited to see how the flowers turn out. I am really interested in those with harlequin backgrounds to see how much variety there will be between plants.

I also have some more established seedlings I deflasked earlier this year. I got these with the intention of using them for an experiment. I figure they'll make really nice gifts for friends who like phals, but don't really grow orchids. They are lovely whites with blushes and red spots.
    P Maki Watanbe x self
    Dtps. Amy Louise 'Bright Eyes'

So here are some "BEFORE" pictures of the various compots. Of course until they get a bit more established, I can't get too gung ho with my fertilizing experiment. So, right now I am sitting on my hands to keep from over-watering and over-fertilizing and give them a chance to start new root growth in the media.

Do keep this thread updated as your plants develop and respond.

How are you going to measure their growth? I would come up with about 4-5 ways to measure them. I would measure all of them right now to get your ground zero. I would use leaf length and width. #of days to spike initiation. # of flowers. roots? Something like that. Then you will be able to compare them objectively! Just a thought!!!

    Hi Sadie,

I would be very interested in the progress of this experiment as well.

My plan--which is perhaps not as scientific as Johns is to take a photo of each compot individually and then develop it (blown up to 5x7). I'll take a sharpie and draw and "up" arrow on the pot itself so I know which way it faces in the picture--then measure each plant and write it on the photo. That will be my baseline.

Then of couse I will do that again in say 3 months and see what has happened. I will also measure leaf size, of course how quickly they grow leaves, root growth, the days to spike initiation, the flower size and count (eventually).

Maybe I'll post the initial measurements picture too.

John, I'm really interested to see the results of your experiments. It is kind of exciting and interesting that you are experimenting the opposite direction. I wish we could had some similar plants that we could put under our various experiments and compare.

That's a wonderful experiment Sadie. I'm looking forward to seeing how it'll affect these little guys.
