    Default Do You Grow Masdevallias

While I love my phal's, I'm thinking of trying my hand at something alittle different. I have read that masde's have somewhat similar growing conditions to phals and paphs but require a ton of humidity, which is a problem for me sometimes in the GH, especially when the fans exhaust everthing! So just how much and how important is the humidity to grow good masde's???? And the temperature is supposed to be cool...well this maybe I can accomplish??? So what do you guys and gals think??????? Should the Doc take a "stab" at this?

I see you are in my old stomping grounds....i'm an old Flint'oid. If you have a basement, wouldn't that have almost the perfect environment for those masvd's???? It's super damp, cool but not cold....all you'd need are the lights for down there. I've often missed my huge Michigan basement. It would have been an orchid heaven!

Hi Howard, from my experience, and I speak as someone who has killed more than a few Masdies, the hardest thing to control is keeping the temperature below 30 celsius... if the temps go above that, the leaves just fall off the plants and then it's just an uphill battle to get them to get going again...

I have one Masdie left and this plant has experienced down to 7 celsius, so the cold isn't as much of an issue (unless you have frosts or snow, I suppose).

the only other thing is lots of cool air movement and of course humidity.

good luck if you do travel down that path... part of this hobby is to extend your comfort zone i guess...

    cheers

I don't know that I'd trade the Florida living for a cool damp Michigan basement...As I've said before, I LOVED my home in Ft Myers....and anyway, I have to use a dehumidifier in the basement or it smells from MOLD

Don't get me wrong...i'd never move back north...I just miss having a huge basement. So much space to put stuff you don't have enough room in the cupboards and closets for! lol

Doc, Here in central Iowa, I am the proud owner of two Madys...and I haven't killed them yet! My basement drops to between 50 and 60 degreesF in the winter months. The flourescent lights may warm things slightly when they are on, probably not too much. I run a dehumidifier well into December but still have roughly 50 percent humidity. The one masdy I had through the winter last year seemed to do fine then. this summer, the basement warmed into the 70's. Poor thing began dropping leaves. Temps night and day were constant in my basement over the summer. I finally chucked the poor thing into the shade on the north side of my house. Daytime temps were 90's, but there was a temp drop overnight. When fall cool down started, the poor thing started growing new leaves!temps were in the mid 80's day and dropping to @ 65/70 nights. Must be the temp fluctuation that is important.

Masdies are hard for me because it gets so hot here. I would love to grow several.

    Cheers,
    BD
