    Default One Stupid Question

How can you tell if a vandaceous type of orchid is a Vanda or Ascocenda? Can you tell it by its appearance only? Its size, or type of flowers? I have here is a mini vanda type of orchid. Looking at its blooms it looks similar to a Asc. John de Biase. But I couldn't find full description of the plant itself.

Here's a pic of the plant I am talking about, sorry I don't have a close up. The flowers are about 2inches accross and the plant itself is about a foot high, more or less.

    Thanks for any help.

Did I miss the answer? It looks like a vanda to me, and a pretty Den on the side.

Traci, you didn't miss anything, the answer I am talking about, I found it on ebay, its a full description of an asconcenda. Exactly what I was looking for. It described the plant as compact, 8-14 inches high. With flowers about 1.5 inches or so. They fit my mini vanda (ascocenda) perfectly.

Lisa, I don't know whats goin on your side. But I hope things would clear up soon.

A real big flower, 4.5" or more, is more than likely a pure vanda. Ascocendas usually are smaller, but some may be larger depending on how much vanda is in its genes. I've never seen an asco with flowers much more than 3.5 or 4", however.

There are also pure vandas that produce small flowers, although they have not been used that much in breeding, except to impart some "nonstandard" colors. But to me, the name "vanda" demands a big, in-your-face dinnerplate with bright gaudy colors. The small stuff just doesn't cut it for me.

Thanks for the info, Jmoney. I've always believed that mine is an asco but then Dosal posted a pic of her asc. blue boy and I said to myself " whoa! that is huge", and then I started to have doubts about what is asco and what is vanda, and as always your info is very informative.

I prefer these minis because I could grow them in pots and then take them indoors when in bloom and "enjoy" them.
