    Default RIP my first orchid

Over the weekend I decided it was time to give up on my dend. I guess when it starts to stink there is no shot at bringing it back. I kept it going for roughly 2 1/2 months before it started to go downhill. It was a nice plant before I got hold of it... Now to decide if I should try another orchid and which one...

oh no!!!!! This is kinda a funny post, but I shouldn't be laughing...

What happened to the dend? It stinks? Did you try to disinfect it and keep it less wet? Take a picture of it and let us see if we can help you!

I am sorry , There is a time to call it quits on a plant , But don't give up, most of us have lost plants I have lost my share of them over the years . It depends on your growing conditions, light available, Temperatures .. ect . If you tell us we might be able to give some ideas on another plant .. Gin

Nicki, is the dend already out of the house? If not, please do as Becky suggested and post a picture. Maybe maybe we can help.

I really hope there was no way of saving this plant cause trash day was yesterday... The poor thing was stinky so I figured it was a lost cause. The plant was hollow and shriveled. When I took it out of the pot I noticed a couple of holes.

It was kept in my bedroom that gets a lot of sun through one window. But it was kept out of direct light. I don't think I watered it too much. And it had new potting medium. I used a diluted orchid fertilizer when I watered (rain water). In the summer the temp in my room gets from the mid 70s - upper 80s. In the winter it's been around low - mid 70. I used a small fan for circulation off and on. I'm open for suggestions on a different orchid type that may do better in my care.

i have killed or near-killed a looooot of orchids in my short time growing, and my mortality rate is certainly still not zero. but i learned a lot too, and now things are looking up. i think everyone here understands your pain. try try again...

If it was stinky then probably bacterial rot got it .
In your Temp. conditions you have a lot of choices . Phals. Oncids , Cattleya , and a lot of others, it will be a matter of light adjustments..Pick out a pretty one .. Gin

    Hi Nicki,

I have to say I am sorry, but your first post with the photo made me laugh a little too. It is good to have a positive humor when learning to grow these amazing plants. I have killed so many and I still kill some - even when I *think* I know what I am doing. I say, go and get another orchid. I believe a phal or paph will be great for the conditions you describe. Best of luck to you!

    Cheers,
    BD
