In the beginning (sounds familiar?) I indiscriminatly bought attractive plants and soon realized what was posssible for me to grow and what wasn t. What wasn t left my brood of 175 and slowly over the years I learned to purchase 'chids that were suitable for my conditions.

Result: Very few plants die now. Those that did----may they rest in heaven on a beautiful tree!

It takes experience and time to learn what you can and cannot grow. Simple as that

That has happened to me (both the helpful family members and a dog I probably could identify.) It was pretty painful then. I like the droll way you describe it.

I've been scared to post on this thread for fear of jinxing it. But in a collection of 30+ orchids and about 30 other tropicals plus a few at work, I haven't had a single death this year or last. I'm sure I'm due at this point, but if I can get lucky, I'm sure all of ya'll with much greater experience can have a death free year. I think part of it is that I have so few, although I have a much harder time keeping the terrestial non-orchids alive and happy than I do the orchids. Epiphyte-care is fun.

Gosh, now that I've posted here I feel like I need to go say prayers, knock on wood, buy a rabbits foot and do a google search for any other good luck charm that will prevent the now inevitable unforseen plant illness that is going to spring up! And like I said, me not killing anything has to be like hitting the lottery. I'm sure you folks have a much better chance than me at having these lucky years.

I don't kill any. But some plants just commit suicide, no matter how much counceling you give them.

UUmm....I thought I would put the blame on suicide too, but I have to admit that my case was more a "non-assistance to orchids in danger"! True, lost three small seedlings last year because I left them outside during the cold winter months!!!! Was saying to myself that they would be OK, but they proved me the contrary. Lost a C.aurantiaca, C. walkeriana, and Den Donmallee x formosum. To find salvation I've been able to replace the C.aurantiaca and Dendro seedling just last week (thanks Orchid fair), feel much relieved now, and will not commit the same mistake again!!
