Forgive my ignorance Becky, but I thought orchid roots needed to dry out between waterings? What's the theory behind this?

Hi all!! Yes, I've heard that orchids like to dry out between waterings, you are right - but let me explain: The normal roots that grow in media, and are accustomed to media, are the ones that like to dry out. These roots on my plant in the water are NOT the same type of roots that grow in media.

When I put this plant into water, I cut all the roots off (Don't ask, I was feeling crazy and i was mad at this particular plant!!). Now, when it regrew roots, it regrew WATER roots, as in roots that adapted to being in water constantly. Plants are very adaptable, and can do things like this.

This was just an experiment that I did, that seems to be panning out well. I don't know if all orchids are suitable for this type of culture, but because of the structure of catts, they seem to be okay with it.

Does that make sense? Let me know if you want me to explain further.

    ~Becky

    The plant looks great Becky.
I would not worry about the algae. For that type of culture, algae is green gold.
