    Default Catt Rot

I have only owned this Catt for 2 weeks, watered it twice (it was never that healthy looking to begin with). After 2 weeks, one of the bulbs in sheath turned BLACK and after another day 3 more turned black. I assume this is rot and has never happened to me before. It is going into the trash but I wondered how does something like this happen?

Debbie, that looks an awful lot like severe burn to me, especially with it all happening in one day's time. Could it have gotten a few hours of direct sun where you're growing it, maybe while you were at work or something?

No direct sun whatsoever, just florescent lights and not all that close to them anyway. There were about 4 rotted bulbs over a day or two but the plant never looked any good.

Wow. That's some fast rot. It must have already started beneath the sheaths when you got it, where you couldn't see it: I've never had experience with something spreading so quickly. It looked like burn because some of the leaves on the top left of your pic seem like they're starting to get yellow-reddish and brown at the ends. Basal rots like what you see on the foreground leaf tend to happen when there's not enough air movement--moisture builds up between the sheath and the PB, and if it's warm, it makes for a perfect environment where bacteria and fungus can thrive. The sheaths can also house hidden scale, so when you're buying catts whose sheaths have already turned brown over the pseudobulb, don't be afraid to peel them down a little ways to see what's under them. Sorry that had to happen, Debbie. Always a bummer, especially with a new plant.....
