No I don't mean do you drink milk or give the orchids ice cream treats.... I mean to you use/add calcium to your fertilizer? I know there are some, like the MSU stuff, that have the Ca already in there. But, for those of you who may not be using something that is SO complete, do you add Ca and if so what are you using? Bone meal or what? I also understand not all chids need/require the addition of Ca...even some species/hybrids within a specific genus may not need the stuff. But what are your thoughts....I know you must have some thoughts....you can't be as brain-dead and orchidlly compromised as I am!

I stick with drinking milk and eating ice cream in front of the 'chids. The only Ca they get is whatever is in the fert I use.

I do add some crushed oyster shell to some mixes. There are Paphs that in nature grow on limestone cliffs...they get "bird grit" added to their mix

I add some crushed egg shells once or twice a year on the few orchids I have that would grow on limestone in nature ...

Although eating ice cream while looking at them, the "Diane way" sounds like such more enjoyable way to do it!

We, like Ron, add crushed oyster shell on the top as a dressing to the media on some paphs. This way the water runs over the shell and we can see when it needs to be updated.

    Cheers,
    BD

BTW - I love ice-cream. (just thought I would throw that in there too.) hehehe

Those of us that live near the coast....well instead of those packing peanuts, I use shells at the bottom of the pots. I turn them upside-down so that there is a big huge air pocket at the bottom. If I run out I can dig out some more bags of old shells....sometimes I even add them to my cattleyas in those clay pellets with a few other weird things. It never fails, when I repot and find shells at the bottom; I have monster roots! You just have to soak them to get the salts off them....I also use bleach to kill icky stuff as well.

I do add Garden Lime (Pelletized) from a BBS as a top dressing in all 11 of my paph.s. I have added about 1 teaspoon full into each pot. I have only been growing paph. since July of last year. They seem to be growing well.I have two Pinocchio's that have been blooming for awhile and two more in spike. Take Care,Rich
