I wonder if the clay pellots used in s/h tend to be cooler, maybe drop the temperature around the roots of the orchids more? I know the pellots in pots on a shelf just above a flourescent light feel warmer than those in pots not directly over the light fixture. Algae should not be a problem for 'chids grown in water, just a bit unsightly. Completely changing the water in you jar or vase every two weeks should flush out rotted material. Yes, there will probably be some rot and decay in water, but if you keep an eye on it and rinse or trim as needed....?

My S/H experience wasn't that good, so I am very suspecious about this type of water culture. Plants always responded well in the first 6 months, grew tons of new roots, then old roots rotted and fungus started, new roots won't grow anymore, or root tip turned black after 1 inch long or so, plant went downhill quickly.

Mine are indoors simply because of climate. It gets well below freezing for a few months of the year. I don't see any reason why you can't grow them in your garden if your weather co-operates!

delphiguy,90% of my plants are indoors underlights.I know that Becky has her plants on a windowsill with natural sunlight.I don't know about letting them be outdoors. You just need to keep the plant up in the jar or glass.I used a couple of clear plastic knives to support the plant from toppling over. The twist ties also add support for the plant being to deep into the glass of water. For all non-believers check out the other links about water culture in this forum. It has been around for awhile, just not well known. I have a phal that I gave root rot to, I know fatal beginers mistake lol, I was wondering if water culture would work for it as it only has one viable root and is in bark and has not shown any sign of doing anything, dying, growing new roots, nothing in over a month, it has 3 very floppy leaves which have not fallen off or yellowed so I really want to give this little guy the best chance I can, I was thinking semi hydro for a while but read it isnt the best plan with a sick plant so wondering if this would work better, if nothing else I could keep a better eye on what is going on. Any ideas and thought much appreciated, if this isnt the best option is there anything else I can try.

Carrie, Have you ever bought a pack of 50 CD's in the plastic spindle pack? Throw the spindle part away when the pack is empty and use the plastic cover for a container for your phal. I have one recovering in one of these containes now. The plant sits down in the container, I add 1/2 inch of waterto the bottom about every two weeks. The leaves have plumped back up, but I don't have new roots yet. The plant really looks good, though!

Cindi, that's a brilliant use of those plastic thing-a-ma-jigs. Could you please put up with a rank newbie though and get very specific (I think I'm reading too much and it's becoming a big blur).

When you say you add water to the bottom...... is that directly into that plastic thing? Or do you drill holes like was stated elsewhere? And are you putting the plant directly into the water? Or are you using those pellet type thingies? <---- thingies is techo geek from an "I don't know nothin' geek."

    Gawd... I feel so stupid!!
