"Buy"? -- almost exclusively at shows. But like, Ron, I also do trades whenever possible -- not only is the postage less expensive than buying a plant, but sometimes manage to get some really neat plants not normally available at the shows.

Depends on what I'm purchasing at any given moment really. Generally, though, I purchase lots of mine from online vendors, phone orders, local nurseries (live near Homestead) and lastly, orchid shows. My first orchid society meeting is this Tuesday, so I may tap into that source...

i'm new so i would say half from big box stores and half on line. the nurseries around here don't carry orchids ("too hard to grow"). we have two major building supply stores here. one won't mark down a plant if it is dead (i assume they charge them back to the vendor). the other one put me in the orchid business! i had 2 orchids, went to the store one small town away where they had tried to drown their orchids and had them all half price. i asked it that was the best they could do and they said $1 for the big ones, 25 cents for the smaller ones. professionally i bring condemned houses up to current building codes, so obviously i'm up for a chalenge. needless to say, 93 orchids came home with me! the same company in my town sells them to me for $4 once the flower dies. now they are restocked, so i won't get any from them for a while so i get the online auction orchids.

Donna, you are lucky you can get them at this price! I went to my local box store about a week ago and I picked one orchid from the mark down shelf. Cashier asked the person in charge if that is half price and he shortly answered "no" (he remembers me and doesn't like me...I guess?! not the first time...) Well, there was someone else also in charge of marking down prices that asked where I took it from. When I showed the rack she said "yes, it is!). So... I no longer take anything from the mark down price rack just because I don't want to deal with the first person!

I've done all of the above as well as orchid society meetings, trades, and even bid online.

As a new collector, I have only found them at the big box store garden section and now some gorgeous ones at Whole Foods where I like to say I performed an Orchid rescue.... ;-)
