I hated to say 'big box stores', but like some others I can't help 'rescuing' a sad little orchid for a few bucks. I've got 1 from a show at longwood gardens, but I didn't water it enough and some from ebay, but again, they could have used more water. Haven't bought any in about 3 years, don't have the space yet. It was above 40deg F in my area on Sunday and I was sooooo tempted to go to my favorite garden center to see what they had. I was good and stayed out!

I have used all the means listed to buy orchids. Now I go to the downtown L.A. wholesale flower mart and buy directly from the grower or their rep. You can usually deal a bit and also talk to them about their cultural practices, which comes in handy when transitioning them.
I say go with what works best...

My first vanda's I did buy at a garden center. Later I did buy my seedlings from internet vendors. And I also have some flasks with vanda's and asco's. They come directly from Thailand.

I live in the wastelands of Arizona where we don't have orchid shows. I picked up a couple NOID phals at the grocery store to compliment my bigger office when I recently got moved and that's what got me hooked. Aside from one other grocery store purchase (a HUGE cymbidium that I got at a steal, quite by accident), I have gotten everything on line.

Apparently there is an orchid society locally, but it meets at 10:00 a.m. on a weekday, so I can't go and check it out. I do have to go to work sometimes, I guess, so I can afford more orchids!

My local Farmers market supplies me with about 20% of my orchids. Oncidium, Dendrobium and Phals. 20% are rescued from relatives that are about to throw them out after blooming. 60% are from my monthly society meetings that have almost everything.

I do not buy from box type stores. Many of mine are in swaps with other growers from around the US and from Florida nurseries. Few now, online.

Yea, i buy via online vendors, but not usually, then there are orchid shows-i usually end up digging myself a debt hole.....and then there are orchid nights! Nights when our local OS meet up, and we have a table where anyone can bring their plants that they want to sell. I usually end up digging myself into debt then too....its so hard being penniless when the bug still calls you strongly....
