I usually buy at my local nursery because I can see the plant to determine if it's healthy or not.
I sometimes buy at online vendors but it's a 10-15 minute drive to my nursery. (I'm so lucky! )

Living in the Chicago area, I have access to several substantial orchid nurseries within an hours drive.

I buy all my orchids 100% online. I wish there was an orchid nursery nearby.

Mostly online, but I also get a batch every year at the local orchid society show.

I get most of my orchids from my society. By prize, trade or sale.

I buy a fair bit from shows and society functions, but also many from box stores. I find tagged ones fairly often, and you can see them before you buy and pass if they're too rough or expensive for the size. I've had pretty good luck finding some VERY nice (eventually anyhow) things there.
I also engaged in a great trade with another hobbyist in a different area this year. Yard sales are another place I sometimes find things for a good price- sometimes it's NOIDs and you pass, sometimes the homeowner is or was a hobbyist themselves and has divisions of great things.
I usually can't afford mailorder, though I drool over catalogues online. Too bad shipping has gotten so high. I have been lucky with online auctions, but don't often. Farmer's markets and fleamarkets around here seem to all have nothing but overpriced NOIDs. (well except for one lady who is a hobbyist herself)

So far, I have about 25 from the grocery store (with over 1/2 as rescues). I have another 20 from my local orchid nursery in Louisville Colorado and the last 15 from on-line sources (with 10 on order waiting for decent weather to ship).

I will attend my first local orchid society show in March that Ron informed me of. And I would be surprised of I didn't come home with at least one new inmate for the asylum!

Although it may not seem so, Central Pennsylvania is a very rural location. I have to travel over an hour to get to the closest orchid society which is fairly small. I love ordering from catalogs or even calling a vendor if I am looking for something specific that I can't find. There are no stores anyplace in the area that sell named orchids so I don't buy any that way.
