    Default ice cubes for watering?

A friend of mine bought an orchid yesterday. The lady at the store said she waters hers (I'm guessing it was a Phal since that is what he got) once a week by putting ice cubes on it. I couldn't find any real info on this. Can someone tell me if this is a good idea or not? From what I've learned so far I wouldn't think this could be good or effective. Then again I'm still learning and making mistakes(killing plants).
So has anybody heard of this or tried it?

This is a good question. I've never heard of this type of watering. Can't answer, but I will be watching what the experts have to say about it.

This past spring, I bought a phal with a tag on it that said to water with an ice cube. I suppose the theory is that your plant is given a very limited quantity of water, making it less likely that the new owner will overwater. Having all ready figured out how to keep most of my phals alive, I ignored the ice cube directions. I just set the entire pot in a deep pan of water and set soak for 10 minutes, drain, and the plant is good to go for another 10 days or so.

I personally would think the cold water would damage some of the roots...especially those of a warm growing orchid.

Save the ice cubes for watering Cymbidiums

Ok thanks. I thought that as well, the ice could shock the roots among other things. I'll pass on the info.

don't use ice cubes it is a crazy idea. When watering drench the pot, orchids are not like a cactus. Overwatering is from watering too often, not based on how much water used per watering

I've heard of this from other people. There is some grower putting this on tags. I don't like the idea at all, especially for phals. I always water my phals with warm water.

Years ago, I heard about watering hanging baskets with ice cubes. I didn't do that either. Maybe it's leftover childhood trauma from when I would get a fever and have to sit in a bathtub of cold water, wrapped in a wet cloth. BRRRRR! To this day, I want to move to the tropics! LOL

Maxful, Do you have city water? Treated with chlorine? Not good for plants. However, chlorine can be outgassed. Fill an open topped container like a pan or bucket (large open surface), let set overnight on the counter. Next day, the chlorine should have worked out of the water into the air you breathe. Makes it safer for the orchids, don't know if it is safe for you!
