    Default Rescue/gift Phal

My aunt's boss won this plant, but when it stopped blooming and put out aerial roots she cut them off and stopped watering it (why are people affraid of aerial roots?)

Anyway, my curiosity is what about this setup? I haven't seen one potted like this, it seems like it would get good drainage, but basically no airflow around the roots. should I repot?
Also, is there anything I can do to help it recover from having it's new roots cut off? Thanks!

all orchid plants need to be well-drainage and well-aired, if you don't do that .. soon the roots will get rotten and the plant gonna die.

Just a guess here, because I'm new at this myself...... I'm betting the rocks are to keep the plant from falling over. I think I'd maybe try s/h with this one. From what I've read today, you want to do that when the plant is putting out new root growth, so this could be ideal. I'm just not sure how well a phal would do with s/h. Seems to be mixed reviews on that.

Good luck with it. From what I see in the photo, the plant looks basically healthy, which is a miracle considering the treatment it's gotten.

Little phals of less than 3 inch long leaves seem to struggle in s/h. Larger phals usually settle in well.

Is the phal in a vase or a glass bowl?
Can't really tell from the picture ... Looks like there's a sphag ball underneath it too ... Not good ....
I am not crazy about this set-up at all. You should repot it in a more conventional way, the way you like your own phals to be potted.
In a potting mix you are used to.
You are right, it needs the air flow around the roots which it's not getting right now.
There seem to be some healthy roots and it is growing a new leaf so repotting it shouldn't bother this guy too much.

Yes, Its a big glass cylinder (no drainage out the bottom) with large rocks surrounding the moss medium, I think it was originally used as a centerpeice at a party... probably why they had it like this. It never ceases to confuse me how phals in perticular get treated as a fancy decoration and then discarded when they're not currently blooming.
anyway, I'll get to repotting ASAP and see how it does. Thank you everyone!
