My husband brought Vanda Miss Joaquin from Hawaii two years ago. It was just a 5-6" long cutting.

There were planting instructions which I have followed.
Growing Instructions: Pot in coarse chunks of fir or redwood bark mixed with large perlite and hardwood charcoal for drainage (Orchid mix). Seedlings grow nicely with diffuse sun or broad-spectrum florescent tubes. Plant will thrive with 60 to 70 percent humidity and temperatures of 65F to 70F at nights; if the day temperatures are over 90F, keep the humidity high. Fertilize when plant is making new leaves with a timed-release 14-14-14 fertilizer. Also, occasionally applications of water-soluble fertilizers diluted to half strength.
I planted my Vanda in a clay pot, orchid mix. I did not fertilize my plant as required; I did it just occasionally. I believe the plant gets all necessary nutrients from the rain water (I grow my orchids outside). I figured out this is a really strong plant. I decided to repot the plant in April, 2008, and left the bare root plant on the table for about one or two hours under direct sun. I just forgot about the poor vanda!!! The plant burned, so I had to cut a few leaves and clean stem pretty deeply. Here is a picture

I did not expect plant would be OK, but it healed! It bloomed first time in December, 2008.
Now my plant is about 3' tall and doing very well. It is blooming now its third time. Previous blooming was especially good; the plant had 5 opened flowers on the same spike on May, 22nd!

    My plant now:

The plant needs a lot of sunshine and high humidity. The plant is heat tolerant and can endure a lot of sunshine when it rooted well.
