No dear, you are -- at this point -- an 'under achiever'.

Yes that would have been a good line. Don't worry, the opportunity to use that line will undoubtably arise again.

Your hubby is laboring under the misconception that those who get into orchids are in anyway "normal". A perusal of this site and its various posts would quickly dispel any such silly notions. -- But then again, why frighten the poor man?

I haven't done a count in years. I quit counting after passing the 70 mark.

I doubt there is anything normal about it--but here's my theory. You are normal--a normal orchid grower at least--when you have crammed in as many orchids as you possibly can manage into whatever size of grow space you have. And you dream about a bigger space so you can pack it full.

    My current count is 347

    hi margarita,
thats alarming, maybe the admins should limit your views here?

    as for the topic here,
i think "normal" is boring, that word shouldnt be allowed in an orchid-world!

    What a fun post.

I think the hobby allows you to express your hidden obsessive-compulsive tendencies; maybe a bit anal...Did you collect stamps as a teen? Teddy bears?

When I first went to America I couldn't for the life of me figure out the allure of a funny-shaped ball being passed from grown man to grown man, and by golly, do they have to hit one another so hard? Now I am a Steelers guy and I become crazy and sullen if their games are not broadcast on ESPN here in Manila.

And, what fun is there in hitting a pockmarked white ball from hole to hole with a stick over grass and water and sand and woods every weekend? These games on TV put me to sleep.

And, don't start me on all those grunting in the tennis courts...BTW, I have also learned that Rafa Nadal - type shorts don't look great on me.

Everyone has his own level of abnormalcy.

Aussie-rules football...now, that is scary. And the people who like to stampede with bulls in Spain are crazy. As well as those guys who throw very ripe tomatoes at each other, is that in Spain also?

When I thought of myself as a mere dilettante hobbyist a few years ago I had about 40-some. Now I'm starting over and have a grand total of 14. . . but we have an orchid show in my area in a couple months, and there's Christmas, and -- basically, I bet I'll back up to about 40-50 by the end of the year. And, like so many other people have said, that number only comes about because that's about what my space fits.

Is raising orchids in general normal? Not really. Is appreciating the beauty of very slow-growing and primitive plants normal? No, or everyone would have them. I'm pretty happy being abnormal in those ways.

Maybe you could combine hobby spaces with your husband by setting up an orchid forest for his trains to run through, and then you could both quit worrying about normal and just be happily excited.

What is normal? You could buy a ATV or a snow mobile and spend lots more money than what you paid for your collection of 40 orchids. Lots od people have those noisy fun-things and no one wonders if its normal... I think orchids are so much better then any other hobby one could have! However, I am at around 100 and i am starting to feel that maybe I am approaching the upper limit in terms of the time needed to take of my collection.
