    Question mysterious tiny white balls

I am a very new orchid grower and I just bought a Phalenopsis, and after a few days I noticed tiny white balls, about the size of a pinhead or smaller, appearing all over the growing medium. these are not on the plant itself, but it looks like some of them are encased in a white "fungus". I dont' see these little balls on any of my other orchids, and am worried that they are bad. I have seen a few (3 or so) tiny insects looking like small flies around the orchid when I look for them, but do not think they are necessarilly connected to these little balls.
If anyone has any idea as to what these balls might be and how and if I should go about getting rid of them, please let me know! One of the bottom leaves of the plant seems to have a bit of yellow discoloration on it.
    Thanks for your help!!
