    Default Culture for Dend moschatum?

I am not sure if I need to give them winter rest or not. Houston is really damp and cold today (64 high 61 low), but it will warm up to 85+ again soon. Also when should winter rest start, maybe temp drops below 70?

I got 2 pots of them two month ago, they are doing well, both mother plants and keikis on the old canes. Should I repot keikis now, or wait until next spring?

    Thanks!

Liz, how large are the keikis? If their roots are fairly long, you can repot them, but I always think it best to let them take full advantage of the old dendrobium canes they are growing upon until they have established nice roots.

    Cheers,
    BD

Liz, they definitely need a winter rest. I haven't given mine for the last 2 years and the plants have become huge with canes about 3 feet long but NO flowers !! This year I plan to give them a rest starting from the month of November to february and then they should flower by March.

Den.moschatum need winter rest for sure. As long as there is significant temperature fluctuation between day and night, you shouldn't have a problem with blooming them. I got my pulchellum growing indoor with winter low of 15-16'C and bloom regularly everyear. Typically you should cut off any fertilizer by fall, and you can give a weak dose of bloom booster during the winter rest.

This group of Dendrobium doesn't drop the leaf until the next season (second winter) so it's hard to tell if the plant is going into rest or not. I gradually cut off any watering by late fall, (you can still give a light mist) during winter if the cane shrink too much.

The family who gave me the divisions has both the pink and yellow forms of the species. I am not sure if I have both with me (hope so) since they were not labelled.

Last month I received Dendrobium Dream 'Ace' with 6 keikis with 3-6 inch roots. I emailed the seller to ask the pot now or spring question and they quickly responded and said I could pot them up now. It has been cool and rainy here in East Texas for weeks so I am taking my cues from my orchids on when to water and when to rest.

It's been raining for days in Houston now. Since I grow orchids outside, I have serious problem with black rot
