some of those phals have written on the label that can be tossed after thy are done blooming as teh grower will grow more!
i can' remember teh exact wording.

that is how i started buying phals / dendrobiums for a dollar that were done blooming.

not everyone can be passionate about everything.

I cringe at all the xmas trees that get cut and thrown away after a month. it seems crazy to me to cut all these 20 year old trees every year for no use. wish people would use a synthetic tree and keep it for years.

When you take into account the media many of those BBS plants are in as well as the generally lousy care instructions provided, by the time they're done blooming the roots are often so far gone that a great deal of tlc may be required to nurse them back to health. Not surprising that many folks don't want to fool with them at that point. Then too, producers in many of the asian countries can mass produce them (particularly phals) so cheaply that as a disposable plant they are cheaper than buying cut flowers.

Poinsettas are disposable plants for me. While I enjoy their bright colors, they are too much trouble to rebloom the following year.

My first orchid came of a rubbish truck outside a local supermarket when I was picking up pig food, I did not know it at the time that it was a cymbidium, I am not going to add up what that has cost me in time and money. But at the same time I have met a lot of great people and gone to shows in France and Maimi and in Febuary am going to the Tokyo Dome show, I am addicted and love it.

Our box stores will only discount orchids so much - then they send them back to the growers for refunds. They don't throw them out or mark them down low enought to take a chance on - they are mostly overwatered and have very few good roots by the time they are marked half off.

Julie, I have met one such person but she was a real meanie. My friend, an orchid addict, offered to collect these plants from the heap when they are thrown out but the owner just kept giving the "run-around."

Even though she throws them out after they have finished blooming, she refuses to let anyone else have them. Obviously, she is NOT a genuine orchid person.

Hey Dudley, I think I might go to live near these stores.

i got my cockleshell orchid for five bucks from a flower store last year cuz it was just finished blooming. It's already rebloomed twice since. then i went to grad school and my mother tried to kill it.
my cousin goes to a greenhouse that has a genius system where if you bring back the out of bloom orchid with your receipt you get a huuuge discount on the next one you buy, and you can keep doing this. they basically get to sell the same orchid over and over.

I will post some photos of two dens i have that are currently in bloom. to me they are magnificent. they are my first and i picked them out of the trash. my sister is one of those folks that has someone come in and replace her flowers. her florist just throws them out and i would get really lucky if i lived back home. they throw them out every month. i too have asked her to toss them in a box and send them to me. i know that will never happen. maybe i should coordinate my visits better?????
