    Default how sheaths grow

Do catts ever grow with the sheath inside the new bulb? Or does the new growth have to "complete" and then the sheath comes up?

by the time the new leaf unfurls, the sheath is either there or it ain't. occasionally i'm told that buds can form without a sheath, and we've all had plants that send up a sheath and don't actually bloom from them (usually young plants)

Well, some Catt like walkeriana do not have sheaths at all and do not flower from the top where the leaf comes out.

If I am understanding your question correctly, the leaf on the PB has to start forming before the sheath. I have seen a very imature leaf with a sheath next to it but the leaf has to form in all the Catt hybrids and species I have seen.

Now, just because you have a sheath is no gaurantee on blooming. I have seen sheaths dry up and the spike come later as well as no sheath at all on a top flowering Catt hybrid. I am sure we all have seen sheaths without ever seeing a spike as well.

The plant I am referring to here is an Slc. Jewel Box and it had some tough times last year. It finally grew some nice new roots but the 2 new growths from last year never opened, i.e, the leaves from mid last yearare still folded in half.

The 2 brand new growths that started over this Winter are only about 1/2 way developed and I thought I saw a sheath in one. The whole thing seems weird to me, the fact that the older leaves never opened and now the mini-sheath.

walkeriana and nobilior are the oddballs in the catt genus, generally flowering from small growths that look like leafless pseudobulbs. walkeriana at least will usually have a small leaf on these flowering growths. this is not passed onto the hybrids.
