This is so wild. I JUST saw one of these for sale. First time I had seen one and I fell in love. And, it is the one that is considered small for the species. I may just have to buy another orchid.....rats.

    Hi Bill,
This plant seems really very nice and attractive indeed.
Here, in Portugal, we have a lot of sunshine and high temperatures during the summer, maybe good conditions to grow one here ?
So, I'll try to find one too !
Thank you for making us discover this few known orchid.

I had one. Needs lots of space when blooming as the stems are 4-5 feet long and as others mentioned: full sun! Good luck, it reminds me of fireworks when in bloom !!!

    Cheers, Michael

I thought I had started a thread on schombo cultivation but looking for it, found this one. M thomsonae I have flowered, once quite nicely and the second time not as good – but it was those successes which inspired me to get several other species. But none seems to be growing at the moment. I am going to move them up onto the roof of my greenhouse, and they will be sprayed frequently but not watered to see if I ca get them to grow again.

I guess it depends on what kind of ants colonize the plant. If they are just common ants then it won't be so much of a problem but if it is the more aggressive form of ants like those found in the wild, tropical forests then I guess that's a different story altogether.

I like the Schomburkias because of its twisted petals and its perfume but because of the length of the flower spikes and the conditions that it need like full sunshine and the very long dry period it might be a problem for my small grow area where I don't get much full sunshine and often my area is cool and moist because of a lot of phalaenopsis plants.

Well anyway ..... (or maybe place the plants on top of the roof??? LOL!)

Perhaps ... yes maybe some sort of symbiotic relationship.
I saw this video about an orchid olant and some ants that protect it but I forget if it was a schomburkia.

    Dear All,
I just joined this group due to this subject. I have had my Schomburgkia for nearly 7 years . . . nary so much of a spike to be seen. But: this year I hit pay dirt. I now have a nearly 3 yard spike with 8 buds on it that are getting very close to bursting. I'm very excited, needless to say. I live in Tampa, Florida (AZ: 9a) and it lives in my pool cage.

About the ants: Mine is loaded with small black ants that are very attentive to the entire plant. They spend a lot of time on the buds and growth section husks along with scurrying up and down the spike.

To any of the above that have worries about the ants, don't bother. They're docile, at least to me, and don't seem to be invading anywhere else in the cage.

Some of you may be interested in the fact that the old pseudobulbs are harvested by kids of the native lands and, cutting off the ends, are used as little trumpets!

    HTH!
