Default is it really a mini?

Hi everyone! I am new to orchids and this forum. I purchased my first 2 orchids on clearance in early March 2010. In the couple months since that first purchase I realize how truthful everyone is when commenting about orchids becoming an "addiction"!! I have made 2 more purchases, bringing my collection total up to 4 in half as many months!! LOL! My question though, pertains to the last specimen that I purchased. I wanted to find a miniature phalaenopsis and was stunned when I came across this beauty at a local garden center for around $12. I had to get it!! All of my phals are NOIDs and this one is no exception. It came with a tag that simply says that it is a phal, care directions and that it was grown in Canada. There is a website on the tag and I sent them an email asking if they could provide me with more information about the origin of the plant, but haven't received a reply as of yet. OK, so the sticker on the pot said mini phal and the plant is very small (from leaf tip to leaf tip, only about 7 inches and about 8 inches tall). The couple of flowers that are open are just a little bigger than a quarter but I counted 48 (!!!) buds on it!!! I just was wondering if anyone could tell me weather or not they think it is a miniature or if it is just a juvenile plant. If anyone has any clues at to an id that would be great also.

    Thanks

    Welcome Trisha.
Looks like a mini to me.
A normal sized phal would probably fill that pot.
They have also come out with min mini's, about half the size of that plant.

Looks like an Phal. equestris cross of some sort. Is it 8" tall including the flower spike or without? If without the spike, then it is not a mini. If that is counting the spike then it likely is a mini.

Pavel- It is 8 " from the base of the plant to the tallest spike. I have other Phals and this one is definitely much smaller- the leaves and the flowers. I just was asking being as I am new to orchids and was curious.

Not a problem. Phals and other vandaceous orchids often bloom at a very small size but do grow up to be large plants. That being said, it is generally rather difficult to confidently classify them as minis since they keep growing up. Other orchids, like catts and dens are easier as their growth habit is different. Their mature growths eventually top out at a given height. "Miniature" is vegetative growth topping out at about 6". "Compact" tops out at around 9". After that you hit "medium", then "large" then "OH MY GOD!"
