    Default footcandle question

okay i'm fixing to buy a rack and setup 2 fluorescent lamps which take the 32 watt bulbs. I found a chart that 2 of these bulbs will give me 500 fc at 12" so on my setup i will have 1000 fc at 12". I have 3 orchids, 2 phals and one oncidium. The 2 phals are babies i suppose cuz from bottom of pot to top of flower spike they stand about 6 inches tall. Now my oncidium stands 30 inches tall at the top of its flower spike.

Now my problem is my oncidium requires a min of 1500 fc which i can achieve at 8 inches from the light. But my plant is 30 inches tall so what am i suppose to do? or is the 8 inches suppose to be from the light to the top of my flower spike?

This is one of the challenges of growing under lights. The light should be closest to the plant's leaves, not the spike. If the lights are too close to the spike and flowers, the heat/dryness will fry them. With my plants, I try to work any tall spikes around the light fixtures.

I really like that blue-purple phal you have there.
And yes, lots of empty space on your shelves.

LOL well yall are right, it prob won't stay that way for long wife drug me along shopping yesterday, so i had to check out all the orchids at __________ boxstore. And the winner was just add ice orchid from________ (which of course won't be getting ice ). Lowes did have some pretty color ones, but all theirs where potted in pots with no drain holes, boxstores where all just in bad shape, but the one's at homedepot was planted in the bark chips and clear pots sitting inside a decorative pot. So i could look at all the roots and make sure it was healthy. Heres a few pics, one is just a better pic of my to little orchids that i first bought.
