    Question Question on Masdevallia

To those of you that have masdevallias: What do you consider to be the best potting media for masdevallia? I have a masdevallia infracta that isn't performing as well as I think it could and I'm about to repot it. What gives the best result? Also, are there any culture tips anyone else has tried that has greatly improved yours?

Leslie, the masdevallia species we grow is potted in a small bark and charcoal mix. We grow it root bound as it appears to like being tightly packed into its pot. We also grow it in the coolest spot in the greenhouse with very high humidity and lots of air movement. It gets fed and watered on schedule with everything else in the greenhouse. (Too many plants to be specific to one or two orchids.. lol)

I hope this helps. Here is a photo of our masdevallia. It is about 16 years old now, has won several blue ribbons at orchid shows, and has been growing in this same container for at least 10 or more years.

Thanks for the info Bruce. I realized summer before last that they (at the time I had 3) would have to come out of the greenhouse for the summer since we have no real cool areas int he greenhouse. The lone survivor is now camping out on my front porch under a ceiling fan. I will haul out the small bark!

    Leslie
Bruces info on medium is right on the money. An additional thing that may help is using a pot that will have some evaporative cooling ability to help keep the temperature in the root zone down. My masdevallias struggled even inside in the air conditioning. I repotted in Feb and it has made a world of difference.
PM me if you want details.
