Fortunately off-brand vodkas are relatively cheap and since it only takes a tablespoon per 5 gallons it could be cheaper than Super Thrive. Am planing to try it and turn my orchids into CHEAP drunks! LOL

Have not used it for some time but it was something like 1:200 ( ratio of beer to water/fertiliser ). I had good results with it too but unlike Betty there was no singing or partying from the orchid house. Might be they needed something stronger like vodka or whiskey?

Very funny, Yew! Seems that I have started something. :-) Actually, all of Weymans' advice works...I have been doing the vodka, Superthrive, and Epsom salts for about three months now. The only thing I cannot find is the seaweed supplement...Oh well, my orchids are growing & blooming just fine without it. The culprit who let the info out...Betty :-)

Great thread here. Betty if you do not have access to kelp or seaweed you can puree a mixture of leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, lettuce etc and strain the liquid, to this mixture add some Potassium nitrate (KNO3) and you have almost the same substance.

Thanks Andrew you started this topic and thanks to you Betty, because you are sharing with us your little secrets and thanks to all others who contribute your thoughts: even though the topic is extremely serious, I have incredibly fun while reading...
So, if I understood your writing well, I should have beside fertilisers & super thrive also Vodka, beer, rum, honey and I see I'll have to use the mixer to prepare a vitamin supplement too
Wonderful! I just hope I will still have some time for other things, because orchids are just one of my love

no prblem.......ive been using this organic fert. that is made of kelp. Maybe you can try something like that Betty, for your kelp supplement. Its good stuff. It also has b-1 vitamins like super thrive. I on the other hand, never use super thrive cause i believe that we shouldnt be using growth hormones. If i do its rarely, with rooting tonic. Amey's idea sounds like a yummy salad. I never thought of doing stuff like that. Thanks for sharing... Ive also heard of other ways to give plant sugar. Its by injecting sugar into the plant. kinda more technical tho. They also sell this cool instrument that reads the level of sugar in your plant. From this information then gives an overall health measurement. Cool stuff......time to get some cheap vodka
