@ Jordan: I think 'Keiki' is a 3 syllable word and pronounced kay-i-ki. Since it is a Polynesian word why don't you confirm from your Maori friends.

In Malaysia we call the offshoot 'anak' meaning 'baby' or 'child'.

yew, no Maori person in new zealand speaks polynesian now, its something to do with being seperate for a few thousand years, and speaking their own dialect. I think it is more hawaiian than poly. Everyone at my club just calls it key-key any way =)
I like your word tho, anak has a nice ring to it

It is indeed a Hawaiian word. It means "child".

"Key-key" is the incorrect pronunciation prevalent here too -- and it drives me up the wall sometimes. The correct pronunciation is "KAY-key" (accent on the first syllable).

That's because it was a German who wrote out/created the written Hawaiian language Before that event, the Hawaiians did not have a written language. It's also why the correct pronunciation of "Hawaii" is not "Ha-why-ee" but rather "ha-VY-ee" (accent on the middle syllable) -- in the German language, "w" has the sound of the English "v".

wow i actually learnt something today-no school you see, teachers strike lol-i take german as a subject, but i had no idea, whatsoever, that hawaiian, like the english language, was essentially german!
oh and something else i hate, is when your grandmother sit there and listen to you rabbling on about your babies, then they say, "what? what was that?"
