I'll fifth that then - though I try to remember as many new names as possible so as not to be caught out at shows and meetings by the new and younger members who will brand us oldies as "ketinggalan zaman" (in the Malay language) meaning "behind the times". But it is difficult for the old grey matter, which ain't what it used to be.

Thumbs down OOooooh Look A Whatcha Ma Callit

Failure to master & use taxinomical nomenclature is generally what results when hobbyists out number scientifically correct members of a given enterprise. It reverses & makes a mockery of Linnaeu's life's work. Re-introcucing confusion, ignorance as well as a lack of order into a worthy, sophisticated, field is not progression but regression in my opinion. It is also a sad condition to find any worthwhile endeavor falling into. But what do I know about anything anyway?

People who do this are clueless to the necessity for reliable reference & consistent nomenclature to "ID" things that matter. Imagine if all scientists, physicians, or researchers began adulterating & changing their fields language arbitaraily? I'll stick with Linnaeus.

    Thank you very much. . . . .

Giving away the better division of an orchid to someone that 'loves' orchids with precise directions and learning they watered it to death anyway!

Taxonomists are either 'lumpers' or 'splitters' and I'm afraid the splitters have won in the case of orchids. And we, poor orchid growers, have to endure the torture imposed upon us by great minds.
In the 1960s there was a great debate among taxonomists about Aerides odoratum - whether it should be odoratum or odorata. The ta won over the tum when Latin grammarians put in their bit.
Ditto Vanda sanderiana....actually this was worse; even the genus was involved. Thus Vanda sanderiana became Euanthe sanderiana and controversy raged on whether sanderiana was grammatically correct, or should it be sanderana?

Personally I like the sound of 'tum' over the 'ta' and am very happy with the 'iana' over the 'ana'. But. But then, (to quote Pete ) what do I know about anything anyway?
