    Default is my orchid deformed?

the bud has broken but the petal and the lateral sepal on both sides seemed to be still joined together so the flower is not completely opened. i tried to see if there is a line to tear so as to help it open but did not find a distinct line, so i wonder if it is deformed as the two sets of petals seemed to be fused.

is it deformed beyond help or is it too early to tell yet?

If it's starting to open, the seperate flower parts should already be differentiated. Give it a little time, but you may very well have a deformed bloom. What kind of orchid?

The first time a plant flowers it often goes a bit deformed (missing or fused flower parts), usually the plant revert to normal the next time it blooms. Or this is at least my experience...

thanks karen and louis for your replies. the plant is a phal. it is not the first time it flowers though. i bought it last year with flowers. it is the first time it bloomed under my care which calls for celebration really as i am such a novice. the second flower bud bloomed yesterday and it is ok, with all the 5 petals distinct. the first one may have bloomed too early? even before it is formed. now i am not sure what to do. it cannot open fully because it has 2 sets of fused petals. so sad. otherwise the colours and patterns look so vivid, i think better than last year when i bought them. maybe i over-fertilized?

malformed flowers are often seen after spraying with insecticide or other chemical, so fertilizer could be the cause.

Dont think we will know the answer, anyway some hybrids just some times get a bit confused... perhaps because they dont know who they are
