I have heard of banana puree in flasking media, but not used on potted plants. Seems to me it's a great way to invite molds and fungi in for a snack.

I've been growing orchids a long time, and have been through the "home brew" phase concerning nutrition, but I have concluded that most of those end up leaving you with a great many "holes" in your nutritional regimen, as you just don't know what you are - and are not - giving to your plants, and what kind of imbalance you might be forcing on them.

I think the best approach is to use a good, complete, commercial fertilizer, and use it sparingly (orchid "sap" is only about 25% the concentration of other plants), but regularly, as Rich mentioned. If you want to experiment with supplements, do so in addition to the "base diet" of the fertilizer, and you'll be much better off.

I agree, I think we can complicate the feeding of our orchids too much. What for? They survive for millions of years on trees and rocks, without anything else provided for them.

Cindi, is that cold expresso, or coffee grounds? Maybe a little chocolate sprinkle too.

I've had to use eggshells myself but for different reasons . My girl Tamara told me they helped keep the frogs out of the plants They do for a bit but then they come back , so I have a trusty stick

What do the frogs do that they deserve to be smacked?

Frogs are just nasty , first off . Then they (in trying to make themselves comfy), break roots and snap branches if the plant is a bit tender . They also poop in your plant I just don't like them and most of the time the plant that they frequent so much ends up dying . I don't know what they do but I hate frogs .
Oh and they don't eat nearly enough flies and mosquitos to keep them around and their poop and pee smells terrible .
    ......I'm just saying

Size: 5.3 KBNicole, Frog's poop is very good fertilizer. I would presume orchids thrive/survive on in the wild. Some people put horse manure (dried and ancient) on orchids, also blood and bone. If you've got frogs, thank your lucky stars!!! They must be attracted to some bugs you have!! They are dwindling in our country. Can you export some to us.

Annette , I would happily, give them ALL, to you just let me find someone to catch them and you just tell me where to send em . I have absolutely no use for them . Your the first person I've met who has said can you please send me more frogs . I definitely don't know where I would find another like you here .
