i now change my bid to spike too. i must remember ours in NZ have long finished the season.

a good wa to find whether there are spikes or growths on you cymbs, is if the shoot is flattened, its a growth, and if its round, its a spike.

Actually I'm pretty sure this is a grow spike because of the pointed nature of the spike and the splitting of the leaves at the apex. IMHO

Actually the best way to tell if it is a grow or bloom spike is to feel it. You will feel the flower buds inside if it is a bloom spike and it will feel full. If it is a grow it will feel not as bulbous and be more compact.

At this stage I'm pretty sure it's a flower spike. It's round, feels full inside, not flat as the new pseudobulbs it had this summer when I bought it, and I see no leaves on this new growth, as I did on the pseudobulbs. In the first pic is a new pseudobulb, it had a couple this summer. In the second is the new growth, flower spike.

If as you say it's rounded and full then it is indeed a flower spike. It's rather hard to tell in two dimensions. Congrats!!

Thanks Bob. I took a few pics of the spike today. I think it's easier to tell now what it is.
