Smile How Do You Keep Track Of Watering And Fertilizing

Hello out there in the land of good (people) and plenty (of orchids)! I was wondering as your collections grow, and grow, and grow, how you keep track of daily cores such as watering and fertilizing. With the somewhat different requirements for each species and various other orchids this could become a chore in and of itself. Thanks in advance for participating! AL

Right now I give all good soaking once a week, on Saturday. As they soak, I examine them for pests too. After they have all soaked I fertilize them (except for the last Saturday of the month, when I just use plain water). They all get the same fertilizer except those in bud/spike/bloom...which get a bloom booster.

During the week, I check the smaller orchids, mounted orchids & those that like moister conditions daily & water if/when needed.

I have about 55 orchids now, and if my collection keeps growing, this will get harder in the winter (summer is pretty easy even though they have to be watered more often, as most live on the patio & I just water with the hose, and don't worry about where water goes).

I am at 92 orchids and do pretty much what Kathi does. I have recently started keeping a calender so that I can keep track of the little details as the collection grows.

i have 200 now, but it doesnt make a difference to watering.....just aim and fire! either that or i use the sprinkler system on the fence....that way i can time how long and not worry about overwatering. fertilizing is also usually done about once a month, but even then, its usually just on a whim.....the chids dont seem to mind one bit!

ps, im just experimenting with fertilizer, as i have never used it in the past

My schedule is the same as Kathi's except I do my soaking on Sundays. I am working with about 250 plants. Same treatment for the mounted also. Fertilizing schedule the same also.

I use MS Excel. I record watering, fertilizer, type of fertilizer, pest problems and how they were treated, re-potting, flowering, date of purchase and on and on. I'd be completely lost without it.

You Mitch, are a dedicated grower. I envy your effort. I always start something like that but never keep it going.

    Mitch--
You are very organized! I am curious--what is the size of your collection? You do this for each plant?

Thank you, Don. I've found that once the spread sheet is set up it takes very little time to enter the data as part of my daily routine. It also helps focus on each plant individually rather the collection as a whole.

Mitch, I do the same thing...treat each one as an individual. I don't write it down...just keep it in my head. Same thing with watering...Betty
