    Question Coconut fiber as media

Does anyone use coconut fiber (not chips) as media? If so, can you tell me how quickly it breaks down and needs to be replaced? A couple orchids I had bought came potted in coconut fiber, and, not having used this media before, I thought I better find out...

    Thank you.

I use coconut fibre for potting most of my oncidiums and young seedlings. Also a lot for my terrestrials. From what I can tell you, there are two types of fibres, ones those harvested from dry, old matured completely ripened coconuts and the ones harvested from green tender coconuts (the ones from which you get coconut water). The ones from matured nuts have higher lignins and hence more stable, about a year an half before you need to repot, but the ones from raw nuts contain more pith and cellulose, they will decompose in about 8 to 12 months depending on your watering and fertilizing.

A guy in my OS uses coconut fiber for most of his orchids. He says he repots annually, I believe.
