^^ Betty said she used white pearl rocks that you can find at big box store, but I've not heard of that medium. Maybe she can shed some light on this?

If I were to do this, I would probably use LECA since I've got a lot of sitting around

A wise use of existing resources Betty. I think your Encyclia's are going to love being in clear plastic and the pearl rock. Others should be fine to wonderful, but I have no experience putting other orchids into just rock besides Dendrobiums in lava rock. Way to go! AL

They ARE the bottoms of plastic bottles...any size you need for your orchids you can find at any food store. And, I am using the expanded clay pellets. I water the larger ones once a week...the smaller ones about every four or five days. I pick them up & feel the weight of each one, that way I know when one is "dry." This is just another one of my experiments...Betty

hi, Betty, i had used this method but as time passed by, algae tends to collect at the inside of the container due to the transparent nature of the container. how do you overcome this problem? i had tried with antifungal and even diluted bleach (but once the algae sets it, they are tough to remove). eventually the whole plastic just turn green.

Ali, The larger more round shapes are from large soft drink (clear) containers. I have not encountered mold yet, but if I do, I'll use nine parts water, one part bleach to get rid of it. That way I won't hurt my orchids. Even bleach goes bad, Ian. Try FRESH bleach, one part bleach to nine parts of water. This works, as I have tried it myself! Betty :-)

very neat! I think I might do something like this for the next repotting i do. All of them look very nice, but i agree with the others that the more round ones are especially nice looking.
