Default Using Wine Corks as orchid medium

I know it's been mentioned a few here have used wine corks as part of the medium with their orchids. Are they used whole, the same way that styrofoam peanuts are used? Or are they broken up and used as part of a mix?

I use them whole for supporting larger vandaceous types that are in baskets. I have also cut them smaller. I also use the synthetic corks for supporting as well. They never decompose and do a wonderful job. I haven't used them in any mixes. Someone else will have to field that one.

thats a great idea! the cattleya orchid i have seen was on a single cork, and it was like the cork was the core of the earth and the roots and plant were the mantle and crust....just to compare......there was no cork visible and the roots formed a mat about 7cm thick......it was very impressive!
