    Default what Orchid is this?

My name is Ben Nicholas and I'm trying to identify this orchid and not sure which one it is, I thought it might be the heath spotted Orchid but other pictures I've seen of it on the net the petal pattern is totally different.

Can anyone help me to identify which one it actually is?

    Many Thanks!

This looks like one of the european terrestrials. Where abouts do you live? It could be an Orchis or Dactylorhiza species, but because i live on the other side of the world and have no proper access to them, i cant be sure! good luck!

Got it. It is either Dactylorhiza fuschii or maculata (the Heath Spotted Orchid). The blooms are in the same style grouping and the colours are very similar or matching.

The flower picture is in soft focus and the patterns make it hard to see clearly, but distinctly 3-lobed lip and lines of color rather than small spots probably means Dactylorhiza fuchsii (common spotted orchid) rather than Dactylorhiza maculata (marsh spotted orchid).

Yea, ive been going through Google Images with fuschii, and it is more apparent that THAT is what it is.

I live in the South West of England in a county called North Somerset it was growing in a private woodland close to bracken and stinging nettles, also if u look very closely just to the right of the photo can see a snake passing it, this I didn't notice until I posted it on my desktop on my pc. Thanks for all the help.

Welcome, Ben! What a lovely plant - thank you for the nice pictures of something many of us will never be able to see. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Sorry, i cant see a snake, then again, im not sure what im looking for.....English snakes are a bit different to American snakes and Asian snakes aren't they? We dont have them here, and we take pride in being one of the few countries in the world that is snake free!

Anyway, glad to help Ben, ive actually been around England before, but also before my obsession with orchids began (it is a good obsession ). Beautiful place!
