Oh, boy. I was using just a simple, ordinary nursery-brand MSU-type (at least, I think it was MSU type) + Superthrive, and a monthly dose of seaweed emulsion...until a lecture at our orchid society. We had a major cattleya grower come talk to us, and he shared his current fertilizing regimen...which I, of course, copied down..

His recipe was, of course, for a large batch & included things I did not have access to, but I scaled things down & added to my fertilizer/SuperThrive/Seaweed mix: yeast, horticultural molasses & sugar.

Sounds like I am baking cookies, doesn't it?

Remember Kathi, no in between meal sugary treats. It promotes root decay and plant obesity. AL

LOL! Al, I used to think that, then I came here and found that people fed their catts honey, coke, and vodka! That's when I realized catts obviously like to party.

This gentleman's theory was that they need energy, and also that the yeast & molasses promote beneficial soil microbes.

Kathi, all kidding aside it seems as if to many people use and swear by these things such as Vodka so they may very well work, or at least I can't discount them completely. I guess I'm nuts (please do not confirm this fact here), but I am just waiting for someone to say, "Well orchids are people to!" I may not argue the point. AL

Some people just like to have an excuse for their vodka disappearing quickly...

I use Osmocote, Gaviota 63, Gaviota 67, Galore and Biosol. Galore (sheep dung fr New Zealand) is very good for Aranda, Mokara , Renanthera and Catasetum, but I do not put directly into the pot, I put it in a small beg and hang above the pots. For other genera, Biosol/Osmocote is used and put directly into the pot. As for Gaviota, I apply very dilute, 3 tablespoon/64 litres of water on alternate days. I learn this (very diluted fertilizer) from a Taiwanese orchid grower and it is very effective.
