    Default Empty sheath ratio?

I have a Blc. King of Taiwan 'ORCHIS' about to flower for the first time but it looks as if the sheaths might be empty. Does anyone know if there is a high or low percentage of empty sheath production in catts or is it simply a case of bad luck in this case? There are two sheaths but no signs of anything in there yet.

In my limited experience, the existence of a sheath on a catt tells you little about how soon it will flower. I've had some that bloomed out of green sheaths. I've had some that bloomed out of dried sheaths that were that way for months. I've got some now which have had sheaths for almost a year, but I know that I've caused them enough stress that they probably won't bloom until the next season/mature growth. Recently, with the hot & humid weather we've been having, I have two that have pushed up buds on new growths that have no sheath at all!

Proper culture and the proper season are better predictors of when a catt will bloom. It's not always easy to figure out the season on hybrids. Some bloom on every newly mature growth, others hold their sheaths and wait til the proper season. Maybe yours is a fall bloomer? Keep the plant happy and be patient.

I would say that 80% of sheaths successfully produce flowers in my cattleya orchid population, but the large lavenders are the exception and I would put that at 50% or less. Blc King of Taiwan, (mine is var Da Shin,) is very difficult to bloom here. In the 4 years I've had it, I have only bloomed it twice.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it. I suppose I was hoping, in my excitement, that spikes would appear quickly but I should have known. lol

I have found with some of them that if a sheath starts to go off or black I cut them of, and eventualy the buds come.I have a couple that have sheaths for months before buds appear. Some push through the sheath and some need help.
