Wow you guys shot my Orchid Diet all to hell......

But one thing I get out of the experiments is that maybe a little cinnamon dusted into the potting mix might be ok, not to stick to the roots but to discourage growths in the media?

The only time I use cinnamon is on a fresh cut. I aslo use physan 20 once a month in a very diluted mixture on the roots. This seem to be working well for me.

Hmmmmm This thread, with all the talk about food, made me crave cinnamon so I just made sour dough toast with apple butter.......flavored with cinnamon. It tastes Heavenly.

    Wink Cinnamon...

Before I came to "Zen" school I studied a pagan tradition. I have used spices such as Cinnamon for many things... incense, teas, potpourri and of course in cooking. Because cinnamon is "ruled" by the Sun... it is very hot, yes? As an oil, or perfume, very little of it is used. It is always mixed with a "base" oil because it will burn the skin. I found it amazing that it was used on the open cut of the stem, and or roots of an Orchid. It just made them more fascinating to me... but I would think that if the cinnamon was wet and in the pot it might hurt the plant...? Since Vanilla comes from a species of Orchid... it just seems right that cinnamon goes with it! Did you know Vanilla is an aphrodisiac? My grandmother used Vanilla extract for perfume. =)

Not meant to be used on roots. I only use cinnamon for "open wounds" of stem and foliage. I have heard of cinnamon being used on roots but only in dip form (water and cinnamon then just dip roots) as a growth hormone/root stimulator but have never been comfortable trying.
