    Default Dendrobium: Sailor Boy

Yesterday, I attended a two hour orchid intro class at a greenhouse in Waltham, MA, and I feel like I know less than when I walked in there.

This is a Sailor Boy Dendrobium, in a four inch pot. I've had it in a south east window for a couple of weeks, and have watered sparingly. Based on the talk, I moved it to a much cooler room (it may get down at night to 45 deg F) and a west facing window. I could choose a W/SW window if that's considered better. Where it is, it will likely get 3-5 hours of sun at the end of the day (best estimate, of course-- this is new england in winter).

Advice on fertilizer seems to vary according to the species or hybrid type of dendrobium. I picked up the blur granules of Grow More Orchid bloom formula (6.30.30) but have not added any yet, since I thought it might be better not to try to be unringing that bell, than to just let them get by with water to date. I've probably watered 2X per week so far.

Any advice is most helpful. BTW, I have a greenhouse, but it is unheated, so night temperatures now probably reach freezing. I have salad greens out there, but the are hardy enough to survive that. Daytime temps out there will get hot on a sunny day, and I could move the orchids out there for a few hours at a time, but that would probably be confusing for them. Thanks, all!

Again, what media is this one in?

Don't fertilize dens this time of year. Cut WAY back on watering this time of year. If the canes start to shrivel a bit, then give a little sip.

Give it the strongest light you can.

They potted it in a mix of (redwood?) bark, charcoal & perlite. Thanks for responses,
