It fine Sand Tiger86. As long as you take good care of your orchids, it blooms could look like 50 orchids.

Well, house has a sort of skinny brick and glass area inside, with a patio outside the windows. I think they used to call these "Florida rooms"--except mine is really not a separate room, but part of my living/dining room area. Anyway...In summer, the catts and dends go outside, on the patio, which has a huge tree, so no direct sun, but a good deal of light. The rest stay on the other side of the windows, in the "Florida room" area on lighted shelves to supplement the light from the window.

In winter though, all must come in. The outdoor orchids aren't under lights, but will get enough light to be OK for the 2-3 months they'll be in, given the southern exposure. They are on trays & tables to the side of the shelves that get more afternoon sun.

I just pulled everything in earlier this week...may do some rearranging, but right now it looks like this (the pic was taken at dawn, so looks dimmer than it really is):

The shelves are packed. I use baskets with pebbles and water in the bottom to raise humidity, but they also let me "pack" the plants closely together, and yet move them when needed. Oh, and some of the 153 are minis, or baby plants...so its really not as bad as you might think!

Very nice set up, Kathi. Thanks for sharing the picutre with us. I need to get a pic of my lanai or 'FL room' posted as soon as all the 'kids' are in for the winter. It gets a bit crowded, as I have some large bonsai and other somewhat tender plants that need to share the approx. 300 sq ft space, but I make due.
    Cheers,
    Tony

Aahh... a Florida Room - too bad we don't have "Georgia Rooms" to help light and warm our spaces. But, Kathi, you really do have a very impressive and organized looking setup.

Tony - Phillip's bonsais compete for space with my orchids, both inside and outside. He has a bald cypress that must be 3 feet tall and is something like 40 years old (not his work until about 6 months ago). It takes up THE premium space on my deck shelving, summer and winter, and is now hosting the finches and chickadees who wait impatiently for their turn at the feeder. Very picturesque. Interesting, some of the parallels between bonsai and orchids.

I know what you mean, Maura. I have a couple that are from my dad's collection that are huge, (take both me and my wife to move!) The little mounted orchids get their revenge in spring and summer, as I hang several of them in the trees and it works out pretty well!

Very nice Kathi!!! I wish I could do that, there was a giant snow today, If my orchids are outside they'd be snow-frosted and with a hint of maple syrup would be delicious! Lol.
    I Admire your orchids,

BHAhahahahaha Gary...This gave me a good laugh after reading the whole thread......In no time you'll be saying that you wished you would have kept them dead .......because with this crowd of people and RV Orchid talk....your sure to gain plenty of knowledge and success in growing orchids

But in regards to what i do to not go wild..... idk..im picky with plants anyways....very clever with the pot size idea Alex..i dont have enough space anyways ....haha but i only buy plants with labels...if it doesnt have a name then i wont buy it....if it does well then...hahahahah..i have to run out of the store or nursery and drive very fast ...it has to really grab my attention tho. But a good way to get your collection is to collect/trade back bulbs or canes. I have about 8 plants just from backbulb donations. Im always willing to divide and trade tho
