Default My new orchid policy for me...

Do you guys seem to have this problem too? Ok, so you go into a store, you see a orchid and thinks that it's the best orchid in the UNIVERSE and you have to bring it home. But THEN, you see another orchid that is EVEN BETTER! so then you end up bringing 5 orchids home. Anyway my new policy for me and my brain, is every time you bloom a orchid 6 times in a 4-5 inch pot you can get yourself a orchid. Every time you bloom a orchid in a 6-7 inch pot 12 times you can get a orchid. Every time you bloom a orchid in a 8+ pot 20 times you can get a orchid. For the 8+ pot you can buy one orchid OR save to 30 and get 2. HAHAHAHAHA lol. any help?

Addicted? I tried to implement some sort of policy a while ago, but it never worked. So as long as my growing space allowed I kept buying orchids. Now my growing space became to the point completely FULL.

I am just making myself wait til all the orchids I currently have are healthy and have bloomed. Then I might think about another. I have some work to do to my current plants.

Whatever works for you, my friend. I myself try to keep my obsession in check by only obtaining new orchids I have on my Wish List, and some of them are very hard to locate, (ie; Dend. bioculare). That, and the fact that funds are usually scarce and most of my wants are now 30 bucks a pop, keeps me with more room than orchids, (of course my wife would disagree!)
    Cheers,
    Tony

Stop restricting yourself... You know you can't resist... And that avoids you kicking yourself later on when you think 'Dang! Should have gotten that one..'

Definetly! Its an all too common and recurring issue of 'regret' and/or 'hindsight' when you look back and decide/ implement a control policy such as restraint. Often backfires!!!!!infact too often it backfires on you. What may have seemed sensible, responsible and decisive at the time when eye to eye with the orchid based on varying factors 'overdraft', 'christmas and birthday gifts' or simply 'gas bill' or 'car insurance' etc etc, we are all so predictable and throw our mature and wise decision to the dogs, once we identify a perfect situ within our grow area that would be perfect or even seeing its pic on the forum. One thing about the orchid hobby/ passion is that it involves multiple issues which affect and relate directly to our personalities - retail therapy crossed with the 'buzz' as our brain releases dopamine and we feel good and uplifted once again. We can be so guilty of being rebellious, defiant and this is when the overall conclusion plays its part - 'lifes too short'.

My 3 day orchid benders and problems with combined shipping discounts are well documented here. If there were a good orchid store around here, I'd be in real trouble. The other day I noticed something shiny in one of my favorite online stores, so I commenced shopping for other orchids to round out a package but I never ended up buying. I have a lot of things budded and blooming right now, so maybe that urge to acquire slows down a bit when you start reblooming your own.

Now, the weather is getting colder and I won't be able to get packages for a while. I'm sure this weird bout of self-restraint will evaporate and I'll be jonesing for a fix by next April. That usually means I'll be pacifying myself with NoID phals every time I go grocery shopping.

I for one hold my hand up to be counted as someone who will and has resorted to a temporary 'fix' and shortlived dose of physcological pleasure of a lesser desired plant, orchid or not, whilst in a grocery/ supermarket to satisfy the need of an aquisition or addition and engage in the 'routine' applicable to new plants that is carried out so frequently in the growing seasons. A majority of my phals are a result of this.

While this behaviour is only applicable to the masses living in temperate/ season climates, can we actually deny that we are similar in some ways (not all obviously) to those that make the decision to smoke or binge on alcohol or gorge on chocolate and even addictions/habits that are more inappropriate to mention here that dictate a serious life change resulting in collateral damage and other damaging consequences.

Ofcourse growing orchids will never come close to the risk that other addictions pose unless stupidity overwhelmes one to a point where he/she becomes homeless because the rent/ mortgage payments went on Dendrobiums and cattleyas. Still! nothing would suprise me!

Every time I need a new orchid fix I ask myself 'How many plants do you have that you have not taken the time to really understand how to grow them'. That usually deflates me for a while................
